7th CARTAL Conference

The theme for the 7th Linklaters CARTAL Conference on International Arbitration was Sailing Through Tumult: Towards Safe Harbour”. It was hosted virtually from 11th-12th February, 2023, and covered panel discussions on three topics listed below:

  1. Implications of Economic Sanctions on International Arbitration
  2. Arbitration in the 21st Century: Taking Stock of Climate Change and the Environment
  3. Arbitration and Insolvency: Avoiding a Collision Course

The Conference was held in association with Linklaters as our title sponsor. The theme for the 6th CARTAL Conference on International Arbitration was Leaps and Bounds: Arbitration Evolving”. It was hosted virtually from 1st-3rd April, 2022, and covered panel discussions on three topics listed below:

1. Impact of the Interface between Blockchain Technology and Arbitration

2. Disclosure of Third-Party Funding in Commercial Arbitration

3. Expedited Arbitration and Due Process

The Conference was held in association with our institutional partners – the International Chamber of Commerce (International Court of Arbitration), the Mumbai Centre For International Arbitration(MCIA), the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC), the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC), the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb), American Arbitration Association(AAA), International Centre for Dispute Resolution (ICDR), Asian International Arbitration Centre (AIAC), Oil, Gas & Energy Law (OGEL) / Transnational Dispute Management (TDM OGEMID), Young ICCA, and Society of Indian Law Firms (SILF). The Conference is also supported by our knowledge partner Wolters Kluwer.

4th CARTAL Conference on International Arbitration – Navigating Murky Waters: Addressing Uncertainties in International Arbitration”

The theme for the 4th CARTAL Conference on International Arbitration was Navigating Murky Waters: Addressing Uncertainties in International Arbitration”. It was hosted on 5th and 6th October, 2019, and covered panel discussions on three topics listed below:

1. Human Rights And Environment Protection Concerns In International Investment Arbitration

2. Taking Of Evidence In International Arbitration: Prague Rules versus IBA Rules

3. Institutional Arbitration In India

The Conference was held in association with our institutional partners – the Asia Pacific Forum for International Arbitration (AFIA), the Bar Council Of India, the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (India), the International Chamber of Commerce (International Court of Arbitration), the Mumbai Centre For International Arbitration(MCIA), the SAARC Arbitration Council (SARCO), the Society of Indian Law Firms (SILF) and the Vienna International Arbitral Centre of the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber (VIAC). 3rd CARTAL Conference on International Arbitration – Winds of Change: Securing Harmony in Arbitral Practice

The theme for the 3rd CARTAL Conference was “Winds of Change: Securing Harmony in Arbitral Practice” and it was hosted over September 29th and 30th, 2018 at National Law University, Jodhpur in India. Recent years have witnessed a rise in conflicts in arbitral practice across the globe in both the investment and the commercial setting. This, in turn, has been accompanied by a rise in the efforts to achieve symmetry between diverse practices across the globe. The Conference sought to address some of these conflicts and the solutions that have been presented, thereby moving towards harmony in arbitral practice. 

The Panels constituted to probe into the underlying theme were:  

  • The Investment Court System: For Better or for worse?
  • Cross-Institutional Consolidation of Arbitration: The Road Ahead
  • Guerrilla Tactics in International Arbitration: Where to draw the line?

2nd CARTAL Conference on International Arbitration – Looking East: Arbitration in the Asian Age”

The Centre and IJAL, in association with Baker & McKenzie, organised a two-day international conference on the state of arbitration on September 30 and October 1, 2017 at National Law University Jodhpur. The Conference was institutionally supported by the UNCITRAL Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific, the ICC International Court of Arbitration (Paris), the International Centre for Dispute Resolution (ICDR) of the American Arbitration Association, the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC), the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC), the Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre for Arbitration (KLRCA), the Asia Pacific Forum for International Arbitration (AFIA) and the Mumbai Centre for International Arbitration (MCIA).

The theme of the 2nd Annual International Arbitration Conference was “Looking East: Arbitration in the Asian Age”. The definition of East for the purpose of the Conference encompassed favoured and emerging seats of arbitration in North East, South, South East and Central Asia. The main aim of the Conference was to study the different approaches adopted by various regions in Asia in adapting to the practice of international arbitration. The conference brought together prominent practitioners and academicians in dialogue on developments in the practice of international arbitration in Asia.

The 1st CARTAL Conference on International Arbitration – “Arbitration at Crossroads”
On 15th and 16th October, 2016, CARTAL organized an international conference on arbitration, themed “Arbitration at Crossroads”, in association with Baker McKenzie, New York. The Conference was institutionally supported by ICC, SIAC, HKIAC, MCIA and CIArb. The Society of Indian Law Firms was the principal sponsor. The Conference consisted of four panel discussions and was held at the National Law University, Jodhpur in India.

The theme of the Conference alluded to the critical stage which the law and practice of arbitration is at, both domestically in India, as well as in international dispute resolution. The aim of the Conference was to act as a platform for both prominent practitioners and academicians to analyze some of the most contemporary issues and help chalk out a potential roadmap to navigate through them.
